Needle tracking (Magnetic Resonance Imaging)

Due to the distorted appearance of an intervention needle in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), small suspicious lesions – which are often visible solely in MRI – can hardly be biopsied precisely under MR guidance.

The true position of the intervention needle shall be determined automatically and then be visualized. For biopsies with continuous imaging of the region of interest a passive needle tracking algorithm based on only a small fraction of the k-space raw data has been devoloped by which the needle position is determined within a small volume (few parallel slices). The correct orientation of the next image slice depending on the current needle orientation is determined automatically, such that the needle is visible throughout the whole intervention procedure.
