Visualization of DICOM image volumes

VisualMediJa is a Java-implemented tool for the administration as well as for two- (2-D) and three-dimensional (3-D) visualization and
diagnostics of DICOM-conform images.

Its graphical user interface (GUI) is freely configurable and enables multiple interactions with the images (see figures 1 to 3).
Topographic details may be viewed in independent 2-D or 3-D windows.

  • point of view

Fig. 1: Choice of a point of view onto a 3-D object.

  • virtual slice

Fig. 2: Placement of arbitrarily oriented virtual image slices.

  • surgical planning

Fig. 3: Surgical planning, overlay of surgical instruments and devices.

By an interactive composition of such elementary functions, findings or a surgical plan can be documented and stored.
The parameters used for visualization of a previous session can be reloaded to provide an identical visualization.
This feature allows to document specific 2-D images and 3-D image volume views onto diagnostically relevant structures. In addition, 3-D animations
can be generated automatically for reporting.

Generating reports containing specific views or even the annotation of image details using labels becomes valuable e.g. when different
physicians treat the same patient in a shared workflow.
Activity-specific visualization supports the workflow as current aspects can be communicated visually.

The animation shows a visual report of an intermediate stand of finding.
