Medical image analysis
Medical images are frequently used in clinical routine, e.g. for funding or intervention planning. This leads to a high work load for physicians, especially when the image content is unclear.
Especially 3-D sonograms are hardly interpretable when visualized in whole due to blurred images, artifacts, and a restricted view onto the relevant anatomical structures. But the reduction of the image volume to these structures by manual segmentation is tedious and may reveal investigator dependent results.
For routine problems, such images can be computer-based (pre-)analyzed to facilitate funding and support investigator-independence.
Image guided therapy
Many imaging modalities, e.g. X-ray CT, MRI, or PET, are nowadays used for image guided interventions. Sonography and especially 3D-sonography open unique possibilities, as they are non-ionizing and low cost modalities.
Application specific visualization and planning GUIs
Inspection, interpretation and reporting on medical images can essentially be supported with appropriate visualization programs. VisualMediJa is a Java-implemented - i.e. plattform independent - tool for the administration as well as for two- (2-D) and three-dimensional (3-D) visualization and finding of DICOM-conform images.
